I’m a small city girl with big dreams – raised by a seafarer dad and a housewife mom in Bago, a city in Negros Occidental. I finished primary school with honours from Bago City Elementary School, and was an academic scholar at St Joseph High School – Bacolod (now St Joseph School – La Salle) where I also graduated with honours.

My early years writing for our elementary school papers The Twinkling Star and Alitaptap, and my two-year stint as the editor in chief of SJSH’s The Shield, had my future mapped out for me. I realised that I was in love with words and images, and thus journalism was the way to go.

Armed with those big dreams and even bigger support from my parents, I moved to Iloilo and took up Broadcast Communication at the University of the Philippines in the Visayas – Miag-ao. Aside from my academic requirements, I spent most of my time as a member of the UPV Debate Society; then preparing for the European Ambassador’s Cup – Regional Leg, where I was awarded as one of the best speakers.

I transferred to the College of Mass Communications at the University of the Philippines Diliman during my sophomore year and eventually earned my Journalism degree.

I have been working in the media industry since 2009 -- from being a reporter for an alternative news site, to an editorial assistant for a home magazine, then working freelance as a researcher/ producer for a news wire agency. I currently man the night desk at the Manila bureau of a UK-based business newspaper as a senior web production editor. I still work freelance as a producer/ fixer for news wires and international media agencies, as well as writer/ editor for magazines and other publications.

Words are powerful, but photographs are just as much. Words can be misunderstood, but images are universal. They speak to you, conveying not only the photographers point of view but compelling you to see it from your perspective.

I have always loved taking pictures, trying to preserve what was. Eventually I realised the power of images and how it can be utilised to push for the greater good. Now I take photos not only to capture a moment, but I take pictures with the hopes of sparking change.

As a human being first and a journalist second, I see it as my responsibility to, in Finley Peter Dunne’s words, ‘comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.’
